Kayak training with Tim Brabants
Peter Smart served in the first Gulf War. During his tour of duty he was exposed to large amounts of organophosphates which has resulted in poor health to this day. His condition grouped with other toxic poisoning from that war is commonly referred to as Gulf War Syndrome.
Peter has been Kayaking for three years using racing Kayaks developed for disabled paddlers by attaching adjustable floats for stability. Give Them a Sporting Chance arranged for him to meet, Tim Brabants Olympic Gold medallist, at Viking Kayak Club, Bedford. He was able to question Tim about all aspects of Kayak training. From the club they canoed upstream on the Great Ouse to Kempston Outdoor Training Centre before turning back with the wind behind them. Tim offered tips on performance and together they did a trip of 4.5miles. After a short break the pair also paddled a 1000metre route from the club downstream under the main town bridge and along the embankment to just past the suspension bridge. Giving his all Peter managed a time of 5.54 minutes. On return to the Clubhouse Peter was presented with a signed photograph by Tim who also met younger club members. Peter is looking ahead to future sprint regattas and has raised money for NGVFA and Viking Canoe Club.
